Aphorisms
Patricie Holečková (born 21 December 1950) – Czech aphorist. She was born in Slovakia, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow 1969-1974, and has lived in the Czech Republic since 1982.
Her first book publication occurred as an anthology of Czech aphorisms entitled “A Good Word Never Cuts to the Quick” (Book Club, 2004) and her first collection, entitled “Aphorisms”, was published in 2005 by Oftis. In this year there should be out her next aphorisms collection entitled Without many words (Bez zbytečných slov).

He who doesn’t have ideals idealizes whatever he has. (Kdo nemá ideály, idealizuje si to, co má.)
Some people have so much self-confidence that they can’t even be flattered. (Někteří lidé mají tak vysoké sebevědomí, že jim není možné ani polichotit.)
What we don’t have enough courage for today we won’t have enough strength for tomorrow. (K čemu nemáme dnes dost odvahy, k tomu zítra nebudeme mít dost sil.)
So many wise statements go unnoticed because they’re uttered by idiots! (Kolik moudrých myšlenek zůstalo bez povšimnutí jenom proto, že je řekli pitomci!)
We flatter ourselves the most when we say that we value sincerity more than flattery. (Nejvíce si sami lichotíme, když se domníváme, že si upřímnosti ceníme víc, než lichocení.)
I prefer the living thoughts of the dead as opposed to the dead thoughts of the living. (Dávám přednost živým myšlenkám mrtvých před mrtvými myšlenkami živých.)
Whatever we base one little lie on is in fact one big lie. (To, co postavíme na jedné malé lži, je jedna velká lež.)
Self-knowledge leads to the awareness that we are no better than others. (Sebepoznání vede k zjištění, že nejsme o nic lepší než ti druzí.)
Brave is the man who’s able to keep silent while others speak and who speaks while others are silent. (Statečný je ten, kdo dokáže mlčet, když mluví druzí a mluvit, když ostatní mlčí.)
The fight against evil doesn’t require strength, rather courage. (K boji proti zlu není třeba síly, ale odvahy.)
Geniuses are never fully appreciated. We know it from experience. (Géniové jsou vždy nedoceněni. To známe všichni z vlastní zkušenosti.)
Nothing is easy when we try to make it better. (Nic není snadné, když to zkusíme dělat lépe.)
The lesser evil serves a bigger one. (Menší zlo slouží většímu.)
He who obtains control over others easily loses control of himself. (Kdo získá moc nad druhými, snadno ztratí moc nad sebou.)
The model citizen commits only those crimes that go unpunished. (Bezúhonný občan se dopouští pouze zločinů, které jsou beztrestné.)
Those who usually cry there’s no justice are the ones it eventually catches up with. (Že spravedlnost neexistuje, křičí nejvíc ten, koho právě dostihla.)
He who saves the best for last is an optimist. (Kdo si nejlepší nechává na konec, je optimista.)
God helps those who rely on their own strength; those who rely on God get their strength from him in order to help themselves. (Kdo spoléhá na vlastní síly, tomu Bůh pomáhá; kdo spoléhá na Boha, tomu dává sílu, aby si pomohl sám.)
Happiness is multiplied by dividing. (Štěstí se násobí dělením.)

Those who don’t pretend they’re smarter think they’re smarter. (Ti, kdo nepředstírají, že jsou chytřejší, si to o sobě myslí.)

Don’t feel sorry for anyone you can help. (Nelitujte nikoho, komu můžete pomoci.)
The truth hurts even if it causes no harm; lies cause harm even when they don’t hurt. (Pravda bolí, i když neubližuje, lež ubližuje, i když nebolí.)
Unfortunately, people can be banned from speaking about anything, but never about nothing. ( Bohužel, lidem lze zakázat mluvit o všem, nikoli však o ničem.)
A big mistake is to overlook the small one. (Velká chyba je přehlížet malou.)
Only in disappointment do we realize how big our hopes were. (Teprve zklamání odhalí, jak velké byly naše naděje.)
Fear for ourselves makes us cowards; fear for others makes us heroes. (Strach o sebe z nás dělá zbabělce, strach o druhé – hrdiny.)
We like to say it’s never too late in the belief that there’s always enough time for everything. (To, že nikdy není pozdě, si rádi vysvětlujeme tak, že na všechno je vždycky dost času.)
Nothing is further from wisdom than pretending to be wise. (Nic není moudrosti vzdálenější, než její předstírání.)
Reality is never as bad as it seems. It’s always much worse. (Skutečnost není nikdy tak zlá, jak vypadá. Je vždy mnohem horší.)
The truth that hurts heals. (Pravda, která bolí, uzdravuje.)
Any social system not founded on morality is immoral. (Každý společenský systém, který není založen na morálce, je nemorální.)
Young people have illusions about the future, old people about the past. (Mladí si dělají iluze o budoucnosti, staří o minulosti.)
Often one reason for pessimism is the optimism of others. (Důvodem k pesimismu je často optimismus druhých.)
The weak look for allies, the strong for accomplices. (Slabí hledají spojence, silní - komplice.)
Where there is strength, there is also violence. (Tam, kde je síla, je i násilí.)
